FLG partners with Hiring Our Heroes on Veteran Workforce Program

January 16, 2023

Freedom Learning Group, a leading provider of educational content services, and Hiring Our Heroes, a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Program, are partnering to help active military members transition to the civilian workforce through the United States Department of Defense SkillBridge program.

Through this national program, Hiring Our Heroes connects transitioning service members with member companies to network, develop new skills, and gain invaluable experience working in the business.

“It is an honor to be part of the Hiring Our Heroes SkillBridge Corporate Fellowship program,” said Melissa Sanderson, Senior Vice President for Human Resources at Freedom Learning Group.

“By the end of a military career, service members have built up a considerable amount of experience and skills. Skillbridge matches veterans to military-ready companies and aids in their transition to the civilian world. We gain a skilled professional to join our team, and they receive mentorship, support, and experience to take into the next step of their career.”

In addition to practical work experience in the private sector, Hiring Our Heroes SkillBridge fellows participate in an orientation process, attend personal and professional development classes, and network with other program participants.

With a rich history of hiring veterans and others from the military-affiliated community since its founding, the program also has the support of the highest levels of leadership at the company, including Chief Executive Officer Michele Baird.

“The Skillbridge program presents the perfect opportunity for Freedom Learning Group. Hiring Our Heroes is a key partner, and we are delighted to support their flagship program,” Baird said. “Welcoming a fellow aligns with our founding mission to provide meaningful work to our military-affiliated community that results in high-quality educational content and services for our clients. It’s a win all the way around.”

At Freedom Learning Group, SkillBridge fellowship opportunities are available in all areas of the organization, including learning content operations, talent acquisition, business development, finance, and more.

FLG Welcomes Hiring Our Heroes Fellow Mathew Acker

Mathew Acker is a transitioning service member from the U.S. Marine Corps at Patrick Space Force Base in Florida. Most recently, Acker served at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute as a Curriculum Developer/Instructional Systems Specialist responsible for the design, development, and implementation of Military Equal Opportunity (EO), Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) courses for the Department of Defense.

“I’m excited. It’s a really good opportunity to develop professionally outside of the military and see how I can use my experience in program management and curriculum development in a civilian organization. I’m excited to learn and be able to contribute to the team.”

Matthew Acker, Freedom Learning Group Fellow

Acker will be joining FLG’s learning design team, assisting with project scoping, estimating, and execution with clients in the higher education, K-12, and workforce development spaces.
