Please introduce yourself and your role at Freedom Learning Group.

My name is Charles. I am a Subject Matter Expert. My focus is IT and that covers networking, database systems, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

Where in the world are you currently located?

I live in Michigan, the mitten state!

How did you find your way into a career in technology?

I always liked technology as a kid. I’ve always been enthralled with the potential. I remember going to a fair with my dad and they had a robot there that drew a picture of me and it just blew my mind. And after that I wanted to build robots and program them. When I was 14, my orthodontist recruited me to help him set up his database for patient records – it was actually his Customer Relationship Management database (CRM). This was back in the day before there were government protection for medical records, of course. I got to work with this guy who was a retired engineer from IBM to build it, and I learned a lot.

How did you come to Freedom Learning Group?

I just answered a job posting I saw online for an IT expert. Then I interviewed with another IT contractor from FLG and we hit it off, and I started working on my first project. I’ve been with FLG since 2019.

What does a Subject Matter Expert do?

At FLG, that can be anything involved with developing educational content. And educational content can be anything from content for certification examinations to scripts for videos to full course development. I mainly work on certification assessments. I’ve also written a master’s level course on AI for an online university. So every project has specific needs based on the client, particular learning objectives, things like that. We work on project teams and are the ones that provide research, or write the content, or review and validate for content accuracy. Every project and every client has very particular needs. So it takes a lot of knowledge of the subject but also understanding what the client needs.

What is the best part of your job?

I find it really satisfying to know that I’m contributing to the education of the next generation of tech experts. That means a lot to me.

What is a trend you see happening in the education space that you’re excited about?

Something I’m excited about is the fusion of technology into learning processes. My daughter is only 9, but she will find anything she wants to know on the computer. She’s teaching herself Spanish right now. I realize there are concerns that come with that as well, but the ability to enhance learning processes through use of technology tools enables us to do so much more than ever before. I think with AI, we’re able to reach even higher levels of understanding, make these connections faster with more input. Our world is getting more information-dense. I’m very excited about that.

What are your thoughts about the future of AI (artificial intelligence)?

It’s taking over the economy, for sure. There’s going to be a lot more automation in all industries and fields of work. Bigger models and multimodal models, which means they can see and hear in addition to understanding text.

And I mean, I’ve barely slept since Chat GPT came out! Because it really changed everything. OpenAI brought an outpouring of research from universities and companies suddenly putting billions of dollars into AI research and development. I posted something on LinkedIn back in 2019 that said we will have artificial general intelligence by 2025, and now we’re on track for that. This last year has really shown me a blueprint for the future.
